Total E&P Employee in Houston, Texas Wins Worldwide Data Science Competition

Total demonstrated its commitment to innovation with a worldwide “Data Challenge” employee contest to solve some of the most pressing concerns related to its core businesses.  

Total’s Chief Digital Officer, Gilles Cochevelou said, "We realize that many of our employees are knowledgeable about data science, and this expertise will contribute greatly to Total’s future success. It represents an incredible pool of talents, in all our departments.”

In November 2016, the Group challenged its employees to come up with innovative solutions to: 

  • Predict the risks of additional rental costs for the transportation of petroleum products at the Antwerp refinery 
  • Anticipate the demand for heating oil in France 
  • Predict the performance of a well 

All employees were eligible to participate, regardless of their role, their location in the world or their background, and the qualifying rounds lasted for three months. 

The contest finale was a two-hour live event, which took place on February 1st 2017. The ten highest ranked participants from the qualification round had to predict the risks of hydrocarbons unexpectedly rising from a well. 

Nommie Kashani of Houston-based affiliate Total E&P USA won first place.   He was able to most accurately predict the risks by identifying key elements of the dataset within the specified time frame.  Of the challenge, Nommie, who specializes in the management of geosciences data commented, "At Total, we have a wealth of data. It was exciting to think about how to make sense of it and apply that knowledge to real world scenarios." 

“Thanks to the data sciences, we can predict the future, often with very little margin of error,“ he explained. “It helps ensure the safety of our colleagues while making our company innovative and ready to tackle the business challenges ahead."

Given the great success of the first edition of the Data Science Challenge, Total is considering organizing other ones in the future.
