Carville Plant: TotalEnergies' World-Class Styrenics Complex
Decades of Growth and Industrial Excellence
Diverse Products for Global Markets
In Carville, Louisiana, TotalEnergies operates the world’s largest styrene and polystyrene facility.
This world-class, fully integrated styrene–polystyrene site has a long and well-established history, beginning in 1968 with the start-up of its first styrene production line. Continued investment and growth followed, with a second styrene line commencing production in 1976. By 1984, the site further expanded its capabilities with the launch of its first polystyrene production line, reinforcing Carville’s strategic importance within the global petrochemical landscape.
The Carville Plant manufactures crystal and high-impact polystyrene, designed to meet the needs of diverse market applications such as rigid and flexible packaging, insulation, appliances, and specialty compounds.
Advancing Circular Polystyrene Solutions
Since 2024, our Carville polystyrene facility has been offering ISCC-PLUS certified polystyrene grades made from recycled residue.
In parallel, we offer polystyrene grades made with mechanically recycled material sourced from well‑sorted pre‑consumer waste (PIR). These grades are third‑party certified for recycled content, with solutions containing up to 30% PIR, along with the expertise to develop tailored options.
These offerings directly support our global ambition to produce one million tons of circular polymers by 2030 while helping customers advance their sustainability goals with confidence.
