TotalEnergies Joins UT Energy Institute as Newest Industry Partner

Houston, April 21, 2025 - TotalEnergies, a global leader in providing wide ranging affordable, reliable and sustainable energy sources, will serve on the advisory board of The University of Texas at Austin’s Energy Institute. The company will help guide UT’s campus-wide strategic initiatives in energy research, innovation and education. Its real-world expertise will shape investment in early-stage research via the Strategic Energy Seed Grant Program, a funding opportunity designed to catalyze collaborations across the depth and breadth of UT’s energy research ecosystem.

“The Energy Institute cultivates research and educational programs that address the complexity of the global energy systems of the future,” said Brian Korgel, Rashid Engineering Regents Chair Professor in the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering and director of the Energy Institute. “We work with our industry partners to help surface the most vibrant and innovative ideas from our faculty, staff and students doing cutting-edge research in energy, helping to speed translation of these ideas to real-world applications that benefit society as rapidly as possible. We connect the University’s talent with industry leaders in ways that wouldn’t otherwise happen, and we’re looking forward to facilitating those connections between UT and TotalEnergies.”

The partnership with TotalEnergies reflects the company’s growing presence in the United States and its commitment to multi-energy solutions spanning renewables, carbon storage, hydrogen, LNG and more. Globally, TotalEnergies has been a pioneer in adapting its portfolio to address climate change while maintaining a focus on energy reliability and affordability.

“Collaborating with the Energy Institute at UT Austin allows us to tap into a unique community of world-class researchers and forward-looking students,” said Lotfi Hedhli, CEO & President at TotalEnergies EP Research & Technology USA. “We are excited to contribute to and benefit from the Energy Institute’s bold, interdisciplinary approach to energy systems research, and their strong focus on projects related to low-carbon power, electrification, and computational science.”

UT is home to more than 450 faculty and staff researchers working to solve today’s most pressing energy challenges, as well as a large and growing portfolio of research partnerships with government agencies, startups and industry. The Energy Institute serves as the campus convener that brings together industry leaders, policymakers, academic experts and other innovators to tackle the world’s most urgent energy challenges. In addition to the Strategic Energy Seed Grant Program, the Energy Institute supports high-impact energy education programs that combine technical excellence with real-world relevance, including UT Energy Week and the UT Energy Symposium, and has led UT’s involvement in major research consortia that are changing the world.
