A Cornerstone of TotalEnergies’ U.S. Operations
Built in 1936 and acquired by TotalEnergies in 1973, the Port Arthur site is a cornerstone of TotalEnergies’ U.S. operations and one of the company’s six global refining and petrochemicals platforms. Located in the heart of the major industrial zone of Port Arthur, Texas, the site employs more than 600 people and is TotalEnergies’ largest facility in the United States.
With a processing capacity of 238,000 barrels per day, the Port Arthur Refinery can process both heavy crude oil and lighter domestic crudes. The site also features a dedicated low‑sulfur fuels production unit, supporting the supply of cleaner fuels and contributing to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A Fully Integrated Refining and Petrochemicals Hub
The Port Arthur Platform includes a steam cracker in Port Arthur operated as part of the 60/40 BTP joint venture with BASF, reinforcing the site’s role as a fully integrated refining and petrochemicals hub in Texas. This steam cracker transforms a wide range of feedstocks—ethane, propane, butane, and naphtha—into key petrochemical building blocks such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene, and other essential raw materials used across multiple industrial and manufacturing sectors.
Petrochemicals: A Central Pillar
Petrochemicals are a central pillar of TotalEnergies’ U.S. business strategy. Since 2018, TotalEnergies Petrochemical & Refining USA, Inc. has been part of a 50‑50 joint venture with Borealis, known as Baystar. This partnership includes the construction of a 1‑million‑ton‑per‑year ethane cracker in Port Arthur and a 625,000‑ton‑per‑year Borstar® polyethylene unit in Bayport, Texas.
Together, these $3 billion petrochemical projects strengthen Texas’ role as a leading center for U.S. refining and petrochemical production and supporting long-term industrial growth.
A Successful 2025 Turnaround Boosting Safety, Reliability and Performance
In 2025, the Port Arthur Refinery successfully completed one of the largest turnarounds in its history, delivered under strict safety standards and strong operational discipline. At peak activity, up to 2,300 workers were on site, with teams working around the clock in close collaboration to execute the turnaround safely and efficiently.
The effort was marked by rigorous inspections, disciplined execution, and carefully controlled restarts, ensuring operational excellence at every stage. As a result, the refinery emerged more efficient and better positioned to operate safely and reliably for the long term, reinforcing TotalEnergies’ commitment to performance, safety, and continuous improvement across its U.S. industrial assets.
This major turnaround was completed safely, on time, and on budget — with strong environmental performance. It strengthens our competitive edge and reinforces Port Arthur’s role as a key contributor to TotalEnergies' global refining and petrochemicals business.

AI Powering Smarter Operations at the Port Arthur Refinery
At the Port Arthur Refinery, an AI‑powered control room assistant—piloted with Honeywell—is helping make refining operations safer, smarter, and more efficient. The solution provides real‑time monitoring and predictive insights that enable operators to anticipate maintenance needs, detect anomalies early, reduce downtime, and lower emissions by minimizing flaring. This pilot reinforces Port Arthur’s role as a key innovation site within TotalEnergies’ U.S. refining and petrochemicals platform.
